11/04/2011

Fijian Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama has expressed his personal desire to make opportunities available for those with deaf impaired disabilities.

In a televised address delivered in Australia, Commodore Bainimarama praised the work undertaken by Carabez Alliance, a charitable organization devoted to raising donations and awareness for the deaf impaired including Fiji.

In praising the organisation, the Prime Minister reiterated the efforts undertaken by the Fijian Government to make education accessible across all communities in Fiji.

“My Government is committed to “Making Fiji a knowledge based society” as stipulated in Pillar 9 of the People’s Charter for Change, Peace and Progress. The key measure includes the ensuring of improved overall quality of teaching and learning through bettertrained educators among other things,” Commodore Bainimarama said.

He also praised the commitment undertaken by Carabez Alliance to empower locals to effectively carry out their work in Fiji.

“I am pleased to note that in February this year, a Fijian teacher from the Hilton Special School was granted a scholarship at Renwick College. This teacher will be undertaking a Masters in Special Education / Hearing and speech training. This teacher will be the first teacher trained in Fiji in Auditory Verbal therapy, a vital component for the children of the Carabez Alliance to achieve speech and language.  This is perhaps the most significant component of the child’s rehabilitation allowing them full integration into the local schools”.

Also attending this annual charity function was the Ministry of Information permanent secretary, Ms Sharon Smith-Johns who joined more than 200 Sydney residents to support the cause.
