Fire safety

A concerted effort by the National Fire Authority to combat structural fires has paid dividends in the form of a reduced number of fires  according to the authority’s Chief Executive Officer Jone Koroi.

Structural fire statistics totaled 228 last year and by comparison the 179 recorded for the period January to November is being viewed as a success.

The campaign involved a fire safety awareness campaign earlier this year with leaders of various communities such as the chamber of commerce, municipalities, business owners, and schools.

“The media support this year also became an important element in the fire safety awareness campaign and we are extremely appreciative of this partnership with all the media outlets,” he said.

“News releases and feature articles about fire safety were routinely sent out by NFA to all media contacts.

“As we are into the festive season it is important that people continue to practice fire safety in order to prevent fires from happening in their homes.

“Being fire safe is very important for every person. It is to be noted that fire in any place can lead to severe destruction.

“Fire safety begins at home, fire safety does not require a complex procedure of learning. Fire safety simply enables a person to save his life and belongings in the event of any fire,” Mr Koroi added.
