National Fire Authority (NFA) completed a Fire Warden training workshop with the Shangri-La Fijian Resort staff in Sigatoka last Thursday. The workshop was conducted by NFA’s Commercial Training Department in line with the Health and Safety at Work Act regulations.
This training session enables the Fijian Resort staff to learn basic concepts of fire safety and the use of various fire safety equipment and protection methods during a fire incident.
“We had fifty Fijian Resort staff who participated in the fire warden workshop in order to learn basic aspects of fire safety,” said NFA’s Commercial Training Officer Mr Pauliasi Tuiwai said.
“This is the first time for NFA to conduct a Fire warden training exercise with the Fijian Resort which is one of the largest hotel industry in the country. Fijian Resort is engaging its staff in fire safety training, demonstrating its OHS duty-of-care obligation as an employer and property owner through the arrangement of this fire warden training with NFA”.
Fijian Resort is one of the largest hotel industries in Fiji with lots of guests who are being accommodated in the hotel and it is therefore important for its staff to know basic fire safety methods,” Mr Tuiwai said.
“As part of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, workers are required to be trained to respond to a fire incident and how to use the fire safety equipment installed in their workplace such as fire extinguishers, fire alarm systems and current evacuation procedures are tested to ensure it is effective and efficient,” he added.
Mr Tuiwai said: “NFA runs training programs for corporate bodies and we encourage all organizations, hotels and resorts to engage their workers in fire safety awareness and fire warden training”.
