First Fijian Students off to Study Pathology

Two Fijian students have become the first students from the Pacific to be awarded full scholarships to study Pathology in Australia at the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA).

College of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences students Rishal Sharma and Ashwin Chand are excited at having received scholarships to the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA) that is based in Australia.



College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences senior lecturer Dr Ponnu Gounder said that this if the first time the scholarship is being awarded to Fiji.



“It is a great honor for these MBBS students as this scholarship places our College and students in the same elite class as medical schools in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea,” Dr Gounder said.



“It is an exciting field to be in as we can help people through our diagnostic and lab skills,” said Rishal Chand.


The RCPA scholarship is a research based programme so the duo will have their own specialist topics.  

Rishal will be doing research on diabetes while Ashwin will focus on water safety.

The research will be done in country and will be completed at the end of the six-year MBBS Programme.
