A trade show on Fiji’s backpacker industry was held at the Smugglers Cove resort in Nadi today.
Organized by Tourism Fiji to give 56 visiting Australian travel agents an insight into Fiji’s backpacking industry, the tourism marketing arm of government today reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the development of the industry.
“This is another product in Fiji which not many people know off and only come to hear about it when they pass by near the road,” said Errol Fifer the President of the Fiji Islands Backpackers Association (FIBA).
The initial work on the hosting of the inaugural tradeshow was mooted during the Fiji Backpackers Forum which was held in Nadi earlier this year.
“That is when Tourism Fiji and FIBA started talking on bringing in agents to also sell and market our backpacking industry.”
Tourism Fiji’s regional director (Australia) Mr Pranesh Kant said more would be done about Fiji’s backpacker industry.
“What we are currently doing right now is bringing in travel agents from around the world to make them have a feel and actually see the different activities that the backpacker industry provides,” he said.
“Fiji is now more than just a romantic island and provides more than just romantic weddings and honeymoons but there are a lot more offered now in terms of activities such as hiking, hot air ballon rides, sky diving and many more so that is the main reason to bring in the agents so they know what they would be selling.”
