Fuel retailers are the face of Fiji and play an important role says the Attorney General and Minister for Trade and Commerce Aiyaz Sayed – Khaiyum.
He made the comments while opening the Fiji Fuel Retailers Association annual general meeting at the Warwick Resort and Spa along the Coral Coast in Sigatoka yesterday.
“The fuel retailers play a pivotal role in providing services and is a useful industry with the fact that tourists use fuel service stations to travel around the country in rentals and jet-skis,” the minister said.
“So they are the face of Fiji and people have very huge expectations out of these retailers. There is an increased expectation on service, and other services like car wash, lube bay, mini marts among others.
“Some retailers provide services in rural areas and this is taking some of the basic necessities into these rural areas.”
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum urged retailers to remain positive because government would not provide insincere promises to the people.
“The Bainimarama Government is trying to bring changes to the rules and laws that have been around for the past three or four decades and this needs to be reviewed as the global outlook has changed dramatically,” he said.
“There is no question of paying lip service and this Government is trying to provide the right framework not provided by previous Governments.”
FFRA secretary John Philp welcomed the news that Government was concerned as well, especially on the escalating fuel prices in recent years.
“The cut that retailers get is low, especially to the most in demand products (Super and Diesel) and with the way things are going right now the industry will not be sustainable. This news is timely and long overdue,” Philp said.
