The villagers of Keteira on the island of Moala in Southern Lau will no longer have to worry about their safety during disasters, thanks to the newly upgraded evacuation centre funded by the Government.
The Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, through its Self-Help Programme (SHP), invested around $30,000 in the retrofitting of the Keteira Village Evacuation Centre. The upgraded facility is now equipped with essential amenities including washrooms and a kitchen, ensuring it is safe, accessible, and comfortable for use during emergencies.
Keteira, like many villages in the Lau Group, is frequently exposed to strong and damaging cyclonic winds, making disaster preparedness and safe shelter a critical need for the community.
“Whenever a strong wind warning is issued, we gather everyone in the village hall. But it used to be too small to accommodate us all, so some villagers would remain in their homes, risking their lives,” said Village Headman Mr. Maciu Bolatolu.
“We are very thankful to the Government. Before, the hall lacked washrooms and other facilities. Now, with this assistance, we have a much safer place—especially for our women, children, elderly, and vulnerable.”
Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka visited the village last night to check on the progress of the works.
In addressing the villagers, Minister Ditoka reaffirmed the Coalition Government’s commitment to ensuring that rural and maritime communities have equal access to critical infrastructure and services.
“This project is part of our wider goal to reduce vulnerability in remote areas. Everyone in Fiji, regardless of where they live, deserves the same level of safety and development support,” said Minister Ditoka.
