The Fijian Government is coordinating with relevant agencies to address flooding in the Central Division caused recently by heavy rainfall.
Two evacuation centres have been activated in parts of the Central Division including Namalata District School. Fijians living in Sakawasa village in Tailevu are using the Lodoni vilage and church as an evacuation centre.
Both the Hon. Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Pio Tikoduadua and the Hon. Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management Office Inia Seruiratu are on the ground monitoring the situation. The Ministers are coordinating with officials from the Weather Office and the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) to ensure that Fijians living in affected areas are attended to. The Commissioner Centrals Office has also deployed Officials to villages to ensure Fijians living in these parts receive the necessary assistance.
The Fiji Roads Authority has also urged the public to reconsider or take cautionary measures when travelling in the Central Division especially in parts of Tailevu, Naitasiri, Nausori, Rewa where there is limited road access. A landslide in Natokalou village road in Wainibuka has also restricted road access . While the FRA is working on clearing affected roads, motorists and other commuters are urged to take the necessary precautions when travelling.
The public should closely monitor the situation through media reports and ensure that all precautionary measures are taken.
