GOVERNMENT DELEGATION MEETS WITH LAU VILLAGERS

15/01/2014

The Turaga ni Koro (village headman) of the remote island of Tuvuca in the Lau group has commended the assurance made by the Commissioner Eastern and Government officers to look into their water problems.

Mr Josateki Suvi (T/K Tuvuca) said for decades, the island has depended on a small creek beside the village and from rain water.

“The initiative by Government to look for a cleaner water source by tapping into the islands water table is the best thing that will ever happen to this remote island,” Mr Suvi said.

The Commissioner Eastern, Lieutenant Colonel Netani Rika assured the people of Tuvuca that assessments will be carried out to look at ways of addressing their water problems.

“Officers from the Mineral Resources will be doing further bore hole testing this year to see which the best site they can acquire fresh water is. Once that is done we will built a reservoir to supply water to all the homes in the village,” Lieutenant Colonel Rika said.

“Government officers from the Water and Sewerage section have conducted test on the water from the village creek today and the Turaga ni Koro will be informed of the result next week,” Lieutenant Colonel Rika said.

Commissioner Rika is leading a delegation of senior government officials to the Lau Group and said that it is Government’s priority to improve the standard of living in remote islands around Fiji.

“You are not forgotten, however remote you are. We are here to serve people like you. Government wants to develop rural villages so that they enjoy the comfort of better living standard enjoyed by people in urban areas,” Commissioner Rika said.

Today the team will tour the island of Cikobia and visit the island of Vanua Balavu tomorrow.
