GOVERNMENT REVIEWS PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

31/07/2012

The Fijian Government has removed the Queen’s Birthday from the  2013 Public Holiday.

The Minister  for Labour Industrial  Relations  and Employment, Jone Usamate said for some time now the Government  had been reviewing all public holidays.

“As a result government has reduced the number of holidays as part of efforts to be more productivity-driven and to grow the economy.

“Previously, Ratu Sukuna Day,  National Youth Day and Prince Charles birthday were removed from the public holiday list,” the Minister said.

“ Fiji  previously had over 13 public holidays, this has been reduced to 9 for 2013. Public holidays cost approximately $20 million per day. The decision to remove another public holiday will be welcome by businesses as they have continuously raised their concern on the losses incurred from public holidays.”
