The Ministry of Education permanent secretary Dr Brij Lal today urged the government school heads and its board of governors to set the pace for other schools to follow.
The school heads and board of governors for government schools in the central and eastern division today attended a workshop on financial management on the new free education initiative by the government.
In addressing the forum, Dr Lal emphasized that as government schools, they should be taking the lead role in setting standards for other schools to emulate. “For the first time this year, your school will be preparing audited financial reports so ensure that all financial dealings are in compliance with the defined financial regulation,” remarked Dr Lal.
“My humble request to all of you is to survey your school and identify the areas of need. Map out a priority list and ensure that you create an environment in your school that is conducive to learning and to maximize the potential within the students under your care,” commented the Permanent Secretary.
“The Ministry of Education has disbursed all the term 1 grants to all schools to ensure that we have a smooth introduction to the 2014 academic year. The Ministry will continue its capacity building on financial management to its staff to ensure that accountability and transparency is observed.”
The government school heads and board of governors were today trained and equipped by the education officers at Marela House in Suva with the needed knowledge and expertise to implement the new free education initiative in their schools.
