The Public Service Commission permanent secretary, Mr Parmesh Chand today announced that government quarters at Queen Victoria School and in the Sigatoka district are now earmarked for renovation works this month.
The announcement was made after extensive consultations with stakeholders and contractors. There were site inspection visits to these areas in May this year.
βThe funding for the quarters renovation will be sourced from the PSC Trading and Manufacturing Account which has received an estimated $250,000.00 in monthly rental receipts,β Mr Chand said.
He said that once renovation works are complete, the onus is on those approved to occupy these quarters to ensure that they are well maintained. He said that public servants enjoying Government housing need to take good care of their respective quarters not only for the comfort of themselves and their families but also future occupants.
The QVS quarters repairs will cost an estimated $202,999.25 while the Sigatoka quarters will be carried at a cost of $162,594.00.
Effective from January 2012, institutional and pool quarters (with the exception of the Fiji Police, Fiji Military and the Fiji Prisons and Corrections Services) have been amalgamated and are now known as Government Quarters.
As part of the reforms being undertaken by Government, the main purpose of the integration of quarters is to ensure that one body, in this instance, the Public Service Commission, is responsible for the provision of budget and undertaking of repairs, maintenance and management of Government Quarters Fiji-wide.
