School Principals and Head Teachers have been advised to utilise grants given to them wisely.
The Ministry of Education permanent secretary Dr Brij Lal said that school heads must not misuse the grants given to schools.
“The Tuition Grants paid to schools should be used to provide teaching and learning resources. Specifically, 10% should be used for IT and internet, 10 percent for school furniture, 10 percent for text and library books, 10 percent for vocational equipment, 5 percent for Physical Education, music and art and craft and 5 percent for science equipment. The remaining 50 percent is to be used for the daily operation of the school,” Dr. Lal said.
Schools do charge levies to parents. However, levies can only be charged once the Permanent Secretary for Education approves of it.
“All levies charged must be approved by the Ministry of Education. Money collected from levies should be used to upgrade school facilities and can include investment into solar power,” Dr. Lal said.
