With the groundbreaking of a $1.7 million Seaqaqa market and bus stand, the people of Vanua Levu are one step closer to accessible infrastructure that puts opportunity and economic growth right at their doorstep.
Set to be completed by the end of 2026, the new market and bus stand will benefit thousands of households, farmers and provide space for carrier and taxi stand and accommodate 50 vendors.
Minister for Housing and Local Government Hon. Maciu Nalumisa said the project was about modern infrastructure where rural and peri-urban communities were not left behind but were uplifted and empowered.
“Seaqaqa will be a vibrant center for economic activity. It will include space for 50 vendors. There will be dedicated sections for fresh produce, Yaqona, handicraft and a hygienic well designed fish market,” Hon. Nalumisa said.
Hon. Nalumisa said there would accessible sanitation facilities like showers and amenities for people with disabilities and the new bus stand would improve daily travel for commuters, bringing greater convenience for the people of Seaqaqa and surrounding areas.
The Tui Macuata, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere said many families in the rural and remote communities around Seaqaqa rose as early as 4am or 5am to catch the first bus to Labasa to either see their produce, visit health centers or carry out their daily errands.
“When our farmers rise early to tend the land our children walk to the 20 primary schools and five secondary schools and our elders carry the wisdom of generations but our people have not been matched by public investment,” he said.
