Government, Nausori partner in litter campaign

The Department of Environment in partnership with Nausori Town Council aims to stop the illegal dumping of rubbish at Lakena, Nausori.

They will work together with the council in the enactment of the 2010 Litter Decree in the delta town.

In a joint effort, they hosted council members and stakeholders to an environment awareness evening in Nausori on Wednesday.

It was an an opportunity to raise awareness on acts and legislations on environment, litter problems in Nausori and the Lakena dump site.

The council organized scarp metal collection as part of its Environment Week Celebration.

“ We have approached the Lakena community and discuss charges for carting their garbage to Naboro.

“We continue to tell them its Government’s initiative and because of the levy people continue to dump there,” says Special Administrator, Nausori Town Council Mr Napolioni Masirewa.

Director - Environment, Jope Davetanivalu said the Litter Decree 2010 is in place  and they will be issuing notices to businesses and communities who do not comply.

“ The Decree is for everyone including Government ministries.

“ In previous years, the litter legislation was not enforced. Most municipalities were not enforcing the litter decree.

“ That is why a lot of rubbish were always collected during Clean Up campaigns around Fiji,” he said.

The Department said coming weeks; teams will be assigned to hotspots in Nausori to police businesses to see if they are complying with the decree.

They are also encouraging individuals to apply for permits, which have strict conditions on how to discharge waste and guidelines set out by the department.
