Government hopeful for a better Fiji

Government is optimistic that we can build a better Fiji if we can change our minds and attitudes and respect other ethnicity that call Fiji home says Minister for Defence, Natural Security and Immigration, Ratu Epeli Ganilau

He made the comment as he launched Fiji Day Celebrations 2009.

“ We are here because we all live in this beautiful country we call Fiji. It is our home,” he said.

“ I urge each and everyone to take note of Friday 9th October and come and be part of the celebrations.

Ratu Epeli said Fiji Day this year would also be celebrated with Education week with a theme: Educating Fiji Towards Change, Peace and Progress.

“ The theme is centred on the Peoples Charter for Change, Peace and Progress. This year’s theme is education oriented and it targets mainly the children and youths of this country,” he said.

The theme is aimed at encouraging and nurturing mutual respect of other races and culture from a young age. It also recognises that despite our differences we can still build a more unified country.

Ratu Epeli Ganilau said celebrations this year would be on a small scale involving the participation of school children.

“ This decision was made bearing in mind our country’s current financial constraints and also that a bigger celebration is planned for next year, our fortieth year of celebrations,” he said.

The Ministry of Education has decided that Fiji Day will be celebrated nationwide but be school based.

The other two centres of celebrations will be Albert Park in Suva and Levuka given its historical significance.
