Solar power systems will be installed in all primary schools on Kabara Island to meet the educational needs of students.
Through this project the Government again demonstrates the importance it places in the education of children for the future wealth of Fiji.
Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama met with the head teachers of the five primary schools on Kabara, namely Kabara District School, Naikeleyaga Village School, Vunigiagia District School, Komo and Natokalau.
The head teacher at Naikeleyaga Village School Joana Rikibalavu told the Prime Minister that the two teachers at the school had to juggle eight classes and classes have to be extended sometimes into the night, in order for the curriculum to be completed on time.
The lack of lighting is a hindrance.
“We cannot rely on generator power because of the infrequent visit of boats to the island so we are often without diesel,” she said.
The Department of Energy has been directed to come up with a proposal of the solar power installations and quotations within two weeks.
The Prime Minister also directed the provision of library books from classes one to eight, the construction of new toilets, water tanks, computers and printers and two evacuation centres.
Similar assistance has been rendered to schools on Vanuabalavu, Lakeba and Fulaga.
