18/03/2010

With the announcement of all civil servants reporting to work effective from yesterday, the Chairman of the Public Service Commission, Mr Josefa Serulagilagi said the government machinery is now to be fully operational following the aftermath of Cyclone Tomas.

Mr Serulagilagi said civil servants will coordinate closely with all stakeholders to ensure that areas in need of immediate assistance are attended to and that proper assessment of damages gets undertaken for relief and rehabilitation works.

“We are currently working with the National Disaster Management Office on how best to deploy the much needed relief assistance as well as finding out more from the damage assessment reports from teams currently assessing the Northern and Eastern,” he said.

Mr Serulagilagi has urged members of the public to be patient in terms of the restoration of essential services such as water, electricity and telecommunication to their homes.

He said that the immediate focus is on food and shelter for those affected.

He urged civil servants to work together in order to ensure that there is a smooth transition of the flow of government’s services to affected members of the public.
