HEAD OF STATE RECEIVES FAREWELL CALL FROM INDIA’S HIGH COMMISSIONER TO FIJI

The President of the Republic of Fiji, His Excellency Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, received a farewell courtesy call from the outgoing High Commissioner of India to Fiji, His Excellency Shri P.S. Karthigeyan, at State House today.

During the meeting, President Lalabalavu extended Fiji’s heartfelt appreciation to the President, the Government  and people of India for their unwavering support and substantial contributions to the nation's development. He emphasised that the bilateral relationship between Fiji and India is built on mutual respect, a shared history, and a joint vision for future progress.

The President also acknowledged the invaluable assistance provided by the Government of India in key areas such as:

 - Solarisation of the State House: A pioneering initiative that underscores Fiji’s commitment to renewable energy and sustainability.

 - Healthcare Infrastructure: The establishment of the Regional 100-bed Super Speciality Cardiology Hospital, a project that will significantly enhance Fiji’s healthcare services, particularly in cardiology, benefiting not only Fijians but the broader Pacific region.

- Pandemic Support: Essential assistance during the recent  Covid-19 pandemic, demonstrating India’s solidarity with Fiji through the crisis.

Grant Assistance and Scholarships: Financial aid and scholarships which enables Fijian students to pursue tertiary education in India, contributing to skill development and capacity-building for Fiji.

President Lalabalavu in his remarks underscored the enduring relationship between Fiji and India, which has deep roots in history, culture, and economic cooperation. The arrival of Indian indentured labourers in Fiji in the 19th century played a pivotal role in establishing a vibrant Indo-Fijian community that continues to enrich Fiji’s social and cultural fabric.

In his farewell remarks, High Commissioner Karthigeyan expressed his gratitude for the warmth and friendship extended to him during his tenure in Fiji.

He highlighted the continued strength of the India-Fiji partnership, particularly in areas such as trade, development, and people-to-people connections.

The High Commissioner reaffirmed India’s commitment to further strengthening the ties between the two nations and wished Fiji continued success in its development efforts.
