Key operational staff at the Ministry of Health and Medical Services based in the Eastern and Western divisions have completed a refresher course that screens passengers entering the country from high-risk destinations.
This comes ahead of the 18 police officers returning to the country this week from Liberia; a high risk country for ebola virus infections. The police officers had completed their 21 days of quarantine prior to their departure and have been issued a Mission Clearance Certificate. Upon arrival, the medical team on standby will screen them before they are permitted to pass through the country’s borders.
National Advisor communicable disease Dr Mike Kama said the Ministry has done the maximum preparation to deter infected travellers from entering the country.
“The Nadi airport quarantine facility has been supplied with infection control items and adequate numbers of thermometers and work on the isolation facility will be complete before the arrival of the officers”, said Dr Kama. The operational staff will not only screen the returning officers but also interview all other passengers as Fiji is also a transit point for international travellers.
The Ministry is advising the public travelling out of the country to access health protocols and warnings on the countries they intend to visit.
