The Ministry of Health and Medical Services is targeting educators, health officials and the media to raise awareness on Albinism in Fiji.
The Minister for Health and Medical Services, Hon Jone Usamate relayed the message at the opening of Fiji’s first Albinism Workshop held at the Holiday Inn today.
“Albinism has been in Fijian history and culture for as long as anyone remembers. Many of us have friends and neighbours affected by albinism. One of the basic philosophies of the Fijian Government is the inclusion of all people which is in our Constitution,” Usamate said.
Mr Usamate added that the two-day seminar would promote albinism awareness and educate participants on the health component and how its impacts on education.
“A variety of Albinism was identified in our neighbours Tuvalu and the rate of people with albinism is 1 per 700.”
A delegation from Australia that has experience in Albinism care and education is attending the symposium to present and share information as well as come up with new ideas to support people with albinism.
The Minister added that discussions and information gathered at the symposium would enable the Fijian Government to review and analyse albinism in Fiji and improve health education and quality of life for those members of the community with albinism.
