Minister for Youth and Sports Mr Viliame Naupoto has urged parents and guardians of Waiqanake District School in Lami to contribute effectively in the moulding of their children’s attitude and character.
Mr Naupoto was chief guest at the school’s annual prize-giving ceremony yesterday and said; “As parents you need to contribute towards your child’s character building.”
“These children have so many raw abilities with them and all they need is direction and guidance to excel and to build strong characters and positive attitudes,” Mr Naupoto said.
“The teachers and schools can only do so much in their developments and we have to partner with the academic system to produce successful children. And we have to learn ways to communicate better with our children.”
Mr Naupoto challenged the outgoing class eight students and reminded them of hard work and positive attitudes in order to move forward in life.
“Your marks and achievements this year will not go with you to the next level, though it has contributed towards your progress.”
“But you will carry your attitude with you across and if you have worked hard, that same attitude will carry you throughout in life, even though you don’t score well in exams,” Mr Naupoto added.
The school has a roll of 154 and has classes 1 to class 8 with a kindergarten class of 18 students.
Head teacher Josua Sevutia said: “The school caters for Muaivuso, Nabaka, Namakala and Waiqanake villages.”
“We are slowly increasing in our school roll and we hoping for an upgrade soon.”
“We are glad the minister is here to come and walk on our rugged playground and can see first-hand the condition this children play in.
“This is the only primary school with biggest ground in the Lami Zone and we have our Milo Kaji competitions, camp and training on this uneven ground,” Mr Sevutia said.
Mr Naupoto after briefly inspecting the school grounds assured the school management of the Ministry’s support in fixing the school ground for the safety of the school children in Waiqanake and the community.
