The Minister for Justice and Acting Attorney General Hon. Siromi Turaga, and his counterpart Hon. Keisuke Suzuki, signed a Memorandom of Cooperation on Thursday (31.07.25) at the Ministry of Justice Japan, Head Quarters in Tokyo.

The MOC signing marks a significant step in justice diplomacy, reflecting shared commitments to good governance, human rights, and the rule of law. It provides a structured framework for technical collaboration, institutional strengthening, and reform across Fiji’s justice sector.

Key areas of cooperation include:
• Corrections Reform – Support for modernising correctional systems and rehabilitation approaches.

• Institutional Capacity Development (ICD) – Training and exchanges for judges, prosecutors, corrections officers, and election officials.

• Justice for Vulnerable Groups – Promoting inclusive justice for women, youth, and persons with disabilities through gender-responsive approaches.

• Anti-Corruption and Transparency – Cooperation on accountability frameworks and integrity systems.

“This agreement represents a lasting partnership. Together, we are advancing a justice system that is transparent, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of all Fijians,” Minister Turaga said.

Japan’s Minister of Justice reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to regional legal partnerships that promote rule of law, peace, resilience, and democratic values.
The MOC agreement will be implemented through a joint working group, with annual action plans and technical exchanges, supporting Fiji’s broader 2025–2026 justice reform agenda and enhancing the Fiji-Japan cooperation.

The delegation from Fiji were also provided with an overview of a local government election system that was modern, digitised and efficient.
