A UNDP-funded 3-day training on negotiation and mediation skills to equip participants with key negotiation and mediation tools to strengthen their practice was opened yesterday by the Assistant Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Hon. Sakiusa Tubuna, at the Pearl Resort in Deuba.
With the intent to increase insight into dialogue and mediation processes from a negotiation perspective, the training will also include basic good practices in mediation.
In his address, Honorable Tubuna emphasised that the initiative represents a significant advancement in providing our leaders and representatives of civil society, government, and community members with the necessary skills to effectively resolve conflicts and disputes, promote cooperation, and cultivate enduring peace throughout Fiji.
“Mediation and negotiation are more than just tools for conflict resolution. They represent the principles of dialogue, respect, and understanding that are essential to building strong and harmonious communities.”
“In a diverse and multiethnic nation such as ours, where different cultures, perspectives, and interests coexist, the ability to engage in constructive dialogue is crucial.”
The Assistant Minister noted that when the Coalition Government came into office, one of the things he observed was the lack of social cohesion, especially at the community level.
“In our villages, we often assume that everything is fine. However, when we look deeper, we find that many villages are divided into two or three conflicting groups. I hope that initiatives like this one will help address these challenges.”
“Without resolving these conflicts at the village level, development cannot move forward. This becomes a major obstacle when trying to introduce new projects or initiatives. That's why I emphasise the importance of all government agencies, particularly local and regional development teams, working together to assess and improve village governance,” said Hon Tubuna.
“We aim to build a nation that works together, achieving peace and stability in the long run,” he said.
The three-day training at the Pearl Resort will conclude on Friday 20th September.
