The Housing Authority is advising its customers to ensure that their houses are secure during the prevailing weather conditions and have valid Engineers Cyclone Certificates.
Affected home owners, who are insured under its Group Housing Insurance policy, are encouraged to contact the nearest Housing Authority office within 30 days to lodge their claims for damage as a result of the adverse weather conditions.
The Group Housing Insurance policy provides Housing Authority home owners with coverage against fire, cyclone, earthquake, tidal wave, flood and electrical damage to their houses only.
Home owners in the affected areas should take the following precautions:
1. Clear or secure loose timber or iron sheeting in and around your property because these items have the potential to become lethal projectiles.
2. Clear away loose items around doors and windows that may be projected into the house during strong winds.
3. Trim any trees that hang over or can cause damage to your property.
4. Ensure that your cyclone shutters are securely fastened and check that the roof is properly nailed in place and not rusted through.
5. Lift up valuables and electrical items off the floor in case your home does flood to avoid damage or being washed away.
Small but important precautions such as these may not only save your property but also your family.
