The Ministry of Health has confirmed of a typhoid outbreak up in the Keiyasi medical area of Navosa.
Ministry Spokesperson, Iliesa Tora said public health staff were already in Keiyasi as part of the Typhoid Response Team.
“They are working with villagers in the area on how to disrupt transmission and prevent spread to other parts of Navosa.
“At the same time the Ministry of Health has put in place measures aimed at achieving this and improving infrastructure such as water and
sanitation for people in the area.
Tora said measures include working with the Provinicial Office on banning all sports activities in the area, banning the sale of pre-cooked food
items and controlling the staging of public gatherings in the area.
The Ministry of Health is working closely with WHO and AUSAID in trying to control the outbreak, with almost 90 people now suspected
with typhoid.
Two deaths have occured with symptoms showing signs of typhoid infection.
The Ministry of Health has also advised the Fiji Islands Hotel Association and Tourism Fiji on the typhoid outbreak and to advise their stakeholders.
