The International Labour Organisation director in Suva, Mr David Lumotte said the signing of the MOU on Occupational Health and Safety between Papua New Guinea and Fiji was important in light of the increasing number of workers getting injured or encountering grievous harm at the workplace.
“Every year more than 300 million people are injured and 2.3 million people died, with numbers going up and that’s unacceptable.” Mr Lumotte said.
He commended the commitment shown by the two countries.
“On a positive note, today we reiterate the commitment of Government, workers and employers to the aim of ensuring healthy, safe, satisfying and happy working environment. And we also acknowledge prevention as being the principal of highest priority,” Mr Lumotte said
The director acknowledged that both countries faced challenges that crop up in the pursuit of development.
“I heard this morning that they have several challenges like new industries and how they cope with new industries like mining and construction industries both countries are facing these challenges,” he said.
“I strongly believe that the assistance identified by these countries is a bold step forward. Pacific islanders know what they need and they know how to make it work you should take that international experience and adapt it to your own country.”
The MOU confirms Fiji’s technical assistance to PNG on occupational health which will start from June to December this year.
Mr Lumotte assured the two countries of the organisation’s support on the issue.
“Finally I wish to commend the Government of the two countries. I wish to thank them for allowing the ILO to participate and support your initiative. You can be assured while the ILO team is here will make sure we support your plan as best we can,” Mr Lumotte said.
