The Food Regulations 2009 is being reviewed to improve “labeling” requirements for processed food items.
“Improved labeling, along with greater individual understanding of “safe foods”, consumers will be able to make better choices on what to purchase and consume from supermarkets and retailers”, said Health Minister Dr Neil Sharma.
Currently, the purchases of items are based largely on “price” and this is most unsatisfactory. With better understanding of risks of non communicable diseases individuals, communities and society can learn to purchase healthier food items and save themselves the agony of medical complications such as strokes, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and kidney failure.
The process of food manufacturing adds additional salt and sugar as preservatives. These preservatives result in increased calorie intake and enhanced fat and salt content. In turn people acquire a “taste” for such products which poses health risk.
“The Ministry of Health along with all Civil Society Organizations must work hand in hand to advocate better eating habits with reduced salt, sugar and fats if we wish to live long and without Non Communicable Diseases”, Dr Sharma added.
