INTEGRATED SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN SINGAPORE AND BEST PRACTICES FOR FIJI

20/01/2026

A Fiji Government delegation led by the Minister for Housing and Local Government, Hon. Maciu Nalumisa, is undertaking a study visit to Singapore to learn from the country’s integrated approach to solid waste management and circular economy practices.

The study visit aims to strengthen Fiji’s understanding of modern waste management systems, including how waste is planned for, regulated, monitored and reported, and how data is used to support better environmental and public health outcomes. The insights gained will help inform Fiji’s ongoing waste management reforms and support national sustainable development goals.

On the first day of the programme, the delegation received an overview of Singapore’s waste management system, with a focus on the role of the National Environment Agency (NEA). The session highlighted how NEA plans, regulates and oversees waste collection, treatment and disposal, supported by strong policies, operational standards, public engagement and enforcement mechanisms.

The delegation also participated in industry-sharing sessions, including a presentation by Circular Unite, a Singapore-based sustainability start-up. Circular Unite showcased how digital tools, data and artificial intelligence can be used to improve waste management outcomes. Its N.A.T.A.L.I.E. platform helps organisations track waste generation, improve recycling performance and measure carbon footprints, turning waste data into practical actions that support circular economy objectives.

Through these sessions, participants gained a better understanding of the importance of accurate waste data, mandatory reporting and regular waste audits. Such practices help governments, businesses and communities identify gaps, improve waste systems and adopt more environmentally responsible behaviours.

The study visit is a key part of Fiji’s efforts to learn from international best practice and adapt proven models to local conditions. The knowledge and experience gained from Singapore will support Fiji’s transition towards more effective urban waste management and the development of a sustainable and circular waste management system that protects public health and the environment.
