Fiji is in the process of reviewing its consumer protection laws to make them user friendly and to address the problems faced by consumers today.
The International Standards Organization (ISO) Committee on Consumer Policy (COPOLCO) meeting got underway today where the Attorney-General and Minister for Industry and Trade said Fiji has set the pace for Pacific consumer protection following the inauguration of this meeting.
"Since 2009, the Bainimarama Government has amended and introduced a total of 212 laws which were archaic, ….in increasing consumer protection," the Attorney General said.
Minister Sayed-Khaiyum said the world of consumers is changing at a rapid pace and the sale of counterfeit goods is a global phenomenon.
"There is a significant increase of counterfeit goods as goods move freely with sale of low cost products."
The ISO/COPOLCO is a first for Fiji which will give a chance for Fiji to demonstrate its commitment to improving national standards relative to regional and international standards.
