ITU Bilateral

12/04/2011

There were positive outcomes from the teleconference call on Sunday, April 10 between the Secretary General of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Dr Hamadoun Toure , and Fiji's Attorney General and Minister for Communications Mr Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

Among items discussed were the increasing of ITU's presence and projects in the South Pacific and the establishment of an ITU office in the region - in recognition of the need to ensure the sustainable development of telecommunications and to provide universal access to people of the South Pacific.

Fiji offered assistance to ITU in the set up of its sub-regional office in order to ensure the unique and extensive telecommunications development requirements of the South Pacific are tailored to the region and are not submerged by the projects designed for countries in South East Asia , which is also governed by the Bangkok-based Asia-Pacific regional office.
