An initiative of the Roadmap for Civil Service Reforms is “improving the effectiveness of the Public Service Commission”, and according to the Chairman of the Commission, Mr Josefa Serulagilagi, the actions to be embarked upon under this initiative involves the re-structure of the Commission, the re-organization of the Commission meetings and having the Commission to focus on policy and bigger picture issues.
The recent establishment of the Public Service Disciplinary Tribunal is also part of this exercise, as its existence, now gives the Commission more time to deliberate on policy issues, leaving the Tribunal to manage disciplinary issues.
With regards to the meeting agenda, the Commission will now categorise all submissions for the meeting, so as to allow the forum to function more systematically and effectively.
Civil service policy and reform matters will form the main focus of the agenda items, and this will include discussions on the roadmap for civil service reforms, the re-organization of ministries and departments and the re-engagement of retirees.
Mr Serulagilagi stated that the Commission will now meet once a month. The longer period between meetings will provide the Secretariat sufficient time to provide necessary data and information to assist the Commission in making more informed decisions.
