Infrastructure development and revitalization programmes poise Bua province for growth

In 2010, the sugar industry in Bua Province crushed an estimated 500,000 tons of cane. In 2011, this number has increased by nearly 200,000 tons.

Sugar mills now operate with more efficiency and there is a noted uptick in productivity since the Bainimarama Government instituted reforms on the industry.

This evolving success story is being replicated throughout the Province across a range of industries, with a particular focus on agriculture. As a primarily agro-based economy, the island of Vanua Levu is in the process of implementing an agriculture revitalization programme.

Inia Seruiratu, the permanent secretary for Provincial Development shared, “The Bainimarama Government has implemented targeted development efforts – we are not looking at just revenues; we are looking at the needs of the people to find what is most needed and what can be the most effective in each region.”

Bua Province has seen an over five per cent reduction in poverty rates; the Government has revived more than 2,000 land leases in the North and there has been continued growth in both the forestry and mineral industries.

Looking forward, the goal will be to use local stakeholders to facilitate infrastructure development; identify region-specific opportunities for economic advancement; and deliver essential services like housing and electricity to rural regions.

Seruiratu stated the Bainimarama Government is committed to providing the best opportunities for education and skills development to all Fijians, as the country strengthens its international trading partnerships and finds the need to preserve its identity, while also optimizing its internal resources.
