The Attorney General and Minister for Trade and Industry, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum today met with a group of potential Chinese investors who are eyeing Fiji as their next business destination.
After a meeting with the 14-member group, the Attorney General said all investors were serious in setting up businesses here.
“They were exploring opportunities in various areas including education,” Mr. Sayed-Khaiyum said.
“They are looking at setting up language schools to learn English in Fiji, they seem to be in the initial stages of their thought in the education matter.”
He said the investors, who leave our shores on Wednesday, would return with a formal proposal to the Ministry of Education.
“They said they need to come back in the form of a proposal to the Ministry of Education depending on how they want to set up the education institution, whether its going to be completely private or public private plus what sort of funding requirements,”he said.
“As you are aware we have had people coming for a short term but they are looking more at a permanent structure.”
“Those are some of the ideas that they have and now they will go back to the drawing board and come back with a formal proposal to the Education Ministry.”
The Chinese investors have had a series of meetings over the past few days meeting up with Government Ministries and agencies to see how soon they could start.
“They seem to be very keen. They are here until Wednesday and they are obviously serious players,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.
“They have met with various companies and agencies and will meet with the FTIB tomorrow.”
