JOINT ASSESSMENT TEAM TO DEPLOY TO KADAVU

26/10/2019

A joint assessment team led by the National Disaster Management Office will be departing Suva for Kadavu on Tuesday 29th October to conduct risk assessment on the situation on Kadavu Island in the past few days.

Upon receiving the report on the ground from the Provincial Administrator Kadavu, the NDMO can confirm that there is no report of injury or loss of lives but is still prioritizing that risk assessment will be done for the safety of the communities on the ground.

The team will also provide psycho-social support and an awareness to the communities on actions to take in case of a tsunami, earthquake or landslide.

NDMO Acting Director, Litiana Bainimarama says that the priority areas are Lomati, Talaulia, Dagai, Tawava, Rt Eliki Memorial School.

“Moving into the wet season (November to April) our concern is that these communities face the risk of landslide in an event of a heavy downpour” said Ms Bainimarama.

Ms Bainimarama further stated that options are being explored with PA Kadavu for evacuation should the need arise.

Meanwhile long term options for possible relocations will also be considered depending on the outcomes of the assessment.
