KEEP YOUR “GO BAG” HANDY

31/01/2012

People living along low-lying areas and flood prone areas have been advised to move to higher ground as more rain is expected in the coming days.

And as is the practice during such events, the Disaster Management Office said it is important that people take their “Go Bag” with them when they are on the move.

In the flash floods of last week, there was a problem with the people at the evacuation centres not having food as it takes time for authorities to reach these areas due to inaccessibility.

As the Ministry of Provincial Development and National Disaster Management permanent secretary Mr Inia Seruiratu said last week, those affected by the flash floods must take enough rations for at least 24 hours.

The DISMAC, as part of its awareness campaigns, has been advocating the idea of “Go Bag” so that those affected can manage in the first 24 hours.

The “Go Bag” must have batteries, water, a change of clothes, dry food, matches, a small knife, a torch and it must have some canned food.

The DISMAC office has advised that due to the heavy rain that is expected in the coming days members of the public are advised to relocate or move to high grounds or to safe areas to avoid landslide.

The public should prepare themselves and take the necessary basic items in need for daily basis.

Members of the public are to take precautions during this time.
