Government through its Integrated Human Resource Development Programme (IHRDP) under the Ministry of Finance and Strategic Planning, National Development & Statistics office will partner with Korovou Village in Sigatoka to further develop economic potential.
The IHRDP office says there are plans for economic developments in Korovou Village because of its potential for commercial cash crop agriculture and domestic farming practices such as livestock farming and aquaculture.
The village, which is in the district of Nasikawa, lies in the provincial administration of Navosa.
On Monday December 20, 2010 Government will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the village to confirm its commitments and action plans towards rural economic empowerment and development of its resources.
Korovou Village has the availability of resources and infrastructure to support the desired development and socio economic indicator such as unemployment.
In line with the Training for Rural Economic Empowerment (TREE) methodology, surveys conducted indicated that 94.9 per cent of male grow food for sale.
The survey showed people of Korovou have funds in the bank for development purposes, fertile land for cultivation and marine resource (
qoliqoli).
However, youths face a lot of constraints in the village and are not fully participating in economic activities.
IHRDP through its surveys suggested economic developments for the village such as:
- Commercial vegetable farming
- Rice farming
- Fish farming
- Chicken farming
- Mechanical repair –farm machinery repair
This week Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama said his Government would continue to inject funds into the rural areas, which needs a fair distribution of government services.
