Fiji has the potential to develop strong competitive advantages in the e-commerce sector, with its digitally savvy population and growing enthusiasm for new technologies creating a strong foundation for rapid growth and competitive advantage.
This was the comment made by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Co-Operatives, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises and Communications Hon. Manoa Kamikamica at the launch of Fiji’s National E-Commerce Strategy today (25:02:25).
DPM Kamikamica said the National E-Commerce Strategy (2025-2029) was an ambitious plan that would empower businesses, create jobs, drive exports, and position Fiji as a regional hub for digital trade.
“This strategy is not just about online shopping or digital payments. It is about economic empowerment, resilience, and unlocking new doors for every Fijian; it is about ensuring that whether you are a farmer in the Highlands, a weaver in the outer islands, or a tech entrepreneur in Suva, you have the tools, the access, and the opportunity to succeed in the digital economy,” DPM Kamikamica said.
He also stated that e-commerce was just one part of Fiji’s broader digital transformation agenda, which included the development of a National Digital Strategy.
“This ensures that Fiji not only has the infrastructure, policies, and skills to support e-commerce but is also well-positioned to harness the full potential of the digital economy.”
He said Fiji's National Development Plan 2025-2029 prioritised productive sector growth, MSME development, and export competitiveness as key drivers of economic prosperity.
Hon. Kamikamica also acknowledged the challenges endured by businesses, entrepreneurs, and consumers in fully realising the benefits of e-commerce.
“One of the biggest barriers for our MSMEs is the lack of viable, cost-effective internet payment gateways.
“If we are serious about growing e-commerce, we must ensure that businesses—especially our small exporters—can seamlessly receive international payments. The government, in partnership with financial institutions, will work to achieve full interoperability for digital payments and enhance our National Payments System.”
He said through the National E-Commerce Strategy, efforts would focus on training, awareness programs, and financial inclusion initiatives to ensure that entrepreneurs, particularly women and youth, can effectively leverage digital platforms for business growth.
