LAUNCH OF FIJI’S NATIONAL EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT POLICY

13/12/2024

“The 2024 - 2028 Fiji’s National Early Childhood Development (ECD) Policy lays the foundation for a stronger economy and a brighter future for all Fijians.”

This was highlighted by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-Operatives and Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications Manoa Kamikamica during the launch of the ECD Policy at Holiday Inn this morning. [13.12.24]

The ECD Policy aims to ensure that all children in Fiji receive proper care, nutrition and early learning opportunities. It also seeks to protect children from abuse, neglect, violence and conflict.

“In 2017, 15 Pacific Leaders, including Fiji united together with a shared goal: Support the healthy development of our children. This led to the Pasifika Call to Action on Early Childhood Development, a roadmap for collaboration that aligns with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals,” DPM Kamikamica said.

“A critical part of our ECD efforts is the National Early Childhood Development Advisory Committee (NEAC) that brings together Government agencies as the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection, Ministry of Education, Non-Governmental Organisations, faith-based groups and community groups.”

DPM Kamikamica added investing in ECD is not just about doing what is right; it’s a smart economic decision.

“Research indicates that high – quality early childhood education leads to better academic performance, higher graduation rates and improved socio-economic outcomes in adulthood.”

“Every dollar spent on early childhood development leads to better health, education, and job opportunities. It also strengthens the workforce and reduces poverty.”

DPM Kamikamica advised while the Government support is crucial, parents and communities play an irreplaceable role in children’s development.

“Parents are their children’s first teachers, providing the love and support that shapes their future. Communities can create safe and supportive environments where children can grow and learn.”
