LAUNCH OF THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION CLIMATE CHANGE WEEK

07/04/2025

The National Climate Change Week was officially launched today (07:04:2025) with each tree planted during the week symbolising action and adaptation for a sustainable future.

The weeklong campaign with the theme “Adaptation through Tree Planting for a Sustainable Future” will also see 20 secondary schools located beside the coastlines of Fiji pilot the planting of 4,000 seedlings within their immediate seashore from April 7 to April 11.

Speaking at the launch at Suva Grammar School, Assistant Minister for Education Hon. Iliesa Vanawalu said education was the strongest tool in the fight against climate change.

“This theme reminds us that climate change is not just an environmental issue, it is an education issue. It is a community issue, a matter of survival, and more importantly of responsibility and adaptation is no longer a choice, it is a necessity,” Hon. Vanawalu stated.

“Tree planting may seem like a small act, but it holds tremendous power. Each tree we plant is a symbol of renewal. It helps combat carbon emissions. It shades and protects us, restores ecosystems and it gives life. But beyond science, each tree planted during this week carries a message that : "We are taking action, we are not waiting, we are adapting.”

He stressed that students were not too young to make a difference.

“The seeds you plant today will grow into strong trees. The choices you make today will shape the Fiji of tomorrow. You are not just the leaders of the future, you are already leaders today.

“Let us plant not only trees, but values. Let us nurture not only forests, but futures. Let us invest not only in today, but in every tomorrow our children deserve.”

In a move to promote change, schools across Fiji will join hands to take part in tree-planting drives and sustainability activities, from awareness to clean-up campaigns, classroom lessons, artwork, poster competitions, debates, science projects, and cultural reflections on environmental stewardship throughout the week.

To ensure the success of the campaign, the Ministry of Fisheries and Forestry has provided technical support in mangrove planting, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has provided 4000 seedlings while the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources has granted consent for planting mangroves in various planting sites.
