Consultations on the review of the Land Transport Authority Act will be extended to mid December, from its November 26 deadline, to allow more time for public submissions.
LTA chief executive officer Naisa Tuinaceva said the focus of the next few weeks would center on getting submissions from rural areas where transportation access is a challenge.
Public hearings to be held at provincial council offices are planned for:
Central Division
· Namosi – November 24
· Tailevu North – November 25
· Vunidawa, Naitasiri – November 26
Western Division
· Nanukuloa, Ra – November 25
· Vitogo, Ba – November 26
Northern Division
· Wailevu Village, Macuata – November 24
· Nabouwalu, Bua – November 25
· Savusavu, Cakaudrove – November 26
So far there have not been many submissions received from members of the public.
“We want to get as many submissions as possible and this is an opportune time for them to put in their views and not just make criticisms once changes are implemented,” Mr Tuinaceva said.
Public submissions have already been made in Labasa, Suva and Lautoka with submissions received from industry stakeholders like the Fiji Motor Traders Association, Fiji Bus Operators Association, Fiji Taxi Union, Fiji Minibus Association, Police Force and Lautoka Town Council.
“The review process will result in dozens of changes, the removal of irrelevant parts of the legislation, regulations and drafting in of laws that provide legal support for programmes planned by LTA to improve road safety over the next five to 10 years,” he said.
“Some of these include the introduction of automated enforcement technology and speed cameras.”
