LTA CALLS FOR RESPONSIBLE ROAD USE DURING NEW YEAR'S CELEBRATIONS

SUVA, Fiji: The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is calling on all road users to remain alert, cautious and responsible on the roads during the New Year festive season, a time when increased traffic movement and celebrations can significantly raise the risk of road crashes.

LTA Chief Executive Officer Mr Irimaia Rokosawa said the New Year period should be a time of joy and togetherness, not one marked by preventable road tragedies.

Mr Rokosawa also issued a strong warning against the dangerous practice of throwing water at moving vehicles during New Year celebrations, stating that such actions can lead to serious and sometimes fatal crashes.

“Throwing water at moving vehicles can distract drivers, obstruct their vision and cause them to lose control.

“What may seem like harmless fun can have devastating consequences for drivers, passengers and pedestrians. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, and each decision we make can either protect lives or place them at risk,” he said.

Mr Rokosawa reminded motorists to obey speed limits, avoid dangerous overtaking, never drink and drive, and minimise distractions and fatigue while driving.

“The Authority has observed that speeding and drink-driving are among the primary causes of serious road crashes during the festive season,” he said.

“There is no celebration worth risking your life or the lives of others. Drivers must slow down, remain focused and ensure they are fit to drive, especially when travelling long distances or driving late at night.”

He emphasised the important role passengers play in promoting road safety, urging them to take responsibility for their own wellbeing and to influence safer driving behaviour.
