Garment workers are happy with the recent labour laws implemented by the Fijian Government.
One such law is the new Wage Order Regulation, which saw an increment of 10 per cent to garment wages.
The increase, according to garment workers has helped them manage their family needs and wants and improved their living standards.
Salote Vatuvino, an employee of Ranjit Garments is a sole breadwinner and the 10 per cent increase in her wages helps her pay her daughter’s school fees so she can pursue her studies.
Another employee, Sarojni Devi expressed similar sentiments.
“This has helped to cater for the increase in electricity bills,” Ms Devi said.
Initially, when the announcement by the Government was made on the 10 per cent increase in wages, the Textile, Clothing and Footwear Council was happy that the plight of the employees was taken into account.
Council president, Mr Kalpesh Solanki also added there must be a keen focus on labor productivity growth as part of any wage reviews.
Some of the labour laws that were endorsed for the benefit of the employees are Workmen’s Compensation Act, Industrial Association Act, Employment Relations Promulgation and Wages Regulation Order.
