The Permanent Secretary for Education, Dr Brij Lal met with teachers of Navatu Secondary School in Vanua Levu in attempt to solve disciplining issues.
Dr Lal said the issue of corporal punishment has been a concern in the area.
Dr Lal had a closed door meeting on Wednesday with teachers of the Navatu Secondary School.
“The meeting is to address the issues is the disciplining students and also the support given to them,” he said.
“It has become the norm that rural teachers tend to take things into their own hands and the Ministry would like to address the issue here through such forum.
“Another is child support that every child deserve. Parents and teachers need to give the best support to children because the future depends on them,” he said.
Dr Lal’s visit is also a follow-up after a teacher from Vanua Levu used some form of corporal punishment to discipline a student.
Meanwhile, Navatu Secondary School sits at the foot of Natewa Bay in Vanua Levu and has a roll of 200 students from Forms three to six.
The school is into its third year after being upgraded from junior secondary into secondary following Cabinet’s decision to upgrade most rural schools to full secondary status.
