There is tremendous potential of untapped tourism attractions in the Lau Group of islands.

Lau Provincial Council official Mr Timoci Beitaki, said these include culture and traditions unique about the people of Lau.

“These are God-given resources to the vanua and as custodians we should manage it wisely for our benefit,”  Mr Beitaki said.

He then cautioned members of the Lau province to tread cautiously into tourism in a sustainable manner.

At the moment there are no five-star hotels in the Lau Group, only from a few backpacker resorts in Lakeba and Vanua Balavu.

“The only tourism activities we have are when super yachts and cruise liners visit the Lau Group,” Mr Beitaki said.

“They sometimes visit our villages and buy handicrafts and give small incentives for our livelihood.”

He also thanked Government for initiatives implemented in shipping, air services and road infrastructure development in Lau.

Mr Beitaki was speaking at the Tourism Awareness workshop for Lau tikina representatives at JJ’s At the Park, in Suva yesterday.
