Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, Small and Medium Enterprises and Communications, Hon. Manoa Kamikamica, recently visited Taveuni, sharing the Government's vision for transformative developments on the island, primarily focusing on infrastructure upgrades and boosting tourism.
Key among the projects discussed was the proposed extension of Taveuni’s Matei airstrip runway, an upgrade that could make it possible for larger ATR aircraft to operate between Nadi and Taveuni.
Currently, Fiji Link indicates that 42-seater planes could land with an extended runway, though DPM Kamikamica noted his hopes for 72-seater aircraft in the future.
“If that happens, I don't need to tell you what will happen to tourism in Taveuni. You know what will happen then,” he remarked, underlining the potential for increased tourism and economic growth.
The DPM noted that increased flight capacity would elevate the visitor experience and unlock further tourism opportunities on the island.
“Just imagine if you start receiving Nadi to Taveuni ATRs every hour; it'll make such a big difference to tourism in Taveuni because the product here is quite spectacular and special in its own right,” DPM Kamikamica said.
Beyond air travel, DPM Kamikamica highlighted efforts to enhance Taveuni’s energy infrastructure.
Working with officials to explore increased hydropower capacity on the island, the DPM emphasised that additional renewable energy could provide a strong foundation for expansion, including potential hotel developments and the possibility of attracting a branded hotel chain to the area.
Reflecting on the Government’s collaborative approach, DPM Kamikamica stressed the importance of private-sector partnerships.
“Without you, things will just be a Government talking empty,” he said, recognising the role of businesses and organisations such as Investment Fiji in driving economic development.
With 18 months remaining before the next election, DPM Kamikamica committed to continued efforts toward infrastructure improvements and fostering tourism growth in Taveuni.
The Deputy Prime Minister affirmed the Government's broader commitment to supporting Fiji’s outer islands, particularly in infrastructure and tourism, to create sustainable economic opportunities and improve local livelihoods.
