MINISTER AKBAR RECEIVES AUSTRALIAN HIGH COMMISSIONER

The Australian High Commissioner, H.E. John Feakes paid a courtesy call to the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar at the Ministry's head office this morning.

The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss and reaffirm the opportunities for the continuation of the ‘Vuvale Partnership’ between Fiji and Australia in the area of Women’s Empowerment and Gender Equality and Social Protection.

Minister Akbar said, “It was an important dialogue with Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) to maintain the relationship and to share ideas of how the two countries are addressing issues faced as an impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was also an opportunity to highlight the progress of programmes implemented by the Ministry that was supported by DFAT and also initiatives put in place to work with women, children and the vulnerable during Fiji’s humanitarian crisis."

On behalf of the Government of Fiji, Minister Akbar extended appreciation to DFAT for their support and effort to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic and during natural disasters.

“We thank the Australian Government for remaining committed to standing with Fiji as we navigate the current unprecedented challenges."

Minister Akbar acknowledged the visit by the Australian High Commissioner saying that this was a positive move to continue and enhance the addressing of women empowerment, gender equality programs and social inclusion.

Also present at the meeting were the First Secretary (Gender Equality), Jane Kierath, Program Manager, Emily Elliot, Director for Women, Selai Korovusere, and Head of Executive Support, Anushka Artika.
