The Attorney General and Minister for Industry and Trade Mr Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum this evening launched the 2012 Vodafone & Westpac Prime Ministers Exporter of the Year Awards.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum highlighted the role of exporters in the country saying that they play a pivotal role in the prosperity and stability of the national economy by creating jobs and new businesses.
Minister Sayed-Khaiyum said that the awards also reflect the Fijian government’s recognition of this continued role.
“I applaud Fiji exporters for the foresight and determination to venture into tough export arena despite the hardship and sufferance due to the drastic flooding early this year”, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.
He also applauded the efforts of the organisers for another successful event for this year adding that the theme “Celebrating 20 Years of Global Recognition” marks the growth of the event. He also said that holding the event helps people understand that those products that are exported also create more awareness for Fiji.
“That product becomes the customer’s first point of contact with Fiji and the buyers perception of Fiji is formed through the taste, scent, and product presentation”, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.
He also added the importance of the ‘Fijian Made and Buy Fijian’ initiative to promote Fiji products and reiterated Government’s role in pursuing trade liberatilisation at home and abroad and ways to boost export numbers.
“The Bainimarama government will continue to open doors for you and accepts the responsibility of providing Fijian businesses every chance to compete by removing business impediments such as inadequate infrastructure, stringent business regulations, skill shortages and market barriers”, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.
A total of 14 sponsors have signed to sponsor the event and exporters were encouraged to come forth and experience the volume of growth and trade in the market.
