MINISTER FOR EDUCATION, HERITAGE AND ARTS UNVEILS HERITAGE MONUMENT

Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts and Local Government, Premila Kuamr unveiled the Heritage Monument on 7 November at the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji Headquarters in Suva, commemorating the work of the Founding Fathers of Arya Samaj.
 
With its establishment in 1904 and founding period in the Girmit era, the Arya Samaj today is widespread across Fiji and is a fore runner in the education sector.
 
The Sabha’s involvement in education dates back to 1918 when the Sabha established Gurukul Primary School at Saweni in Lautoka. Throughout its 117-year history, the Arya Samaj Community has offered its services to the nation on a voluntary basis.
 
Minister Kumar stated that the commemoration of this historical monument is an earnest effort towards preserving the history of indentureship and the beginning of Arya Samaj in Fiji.
 
 
“This is a noble recognition of the founders of Arya Samaj, and the acknowledgement of the contribution of such visionary leaders who, through their foresight, led the preservation of our heritage and religion, for generations to come”, added the Minister.
 
As a Faith Based Organisation, the Sabha’s contribution to education has been immense. As a stakeholder in education, today it owns and manages fifteen (15) kindergartens, sixteen (16) primary schools, six (6) secondary schools and a tertiary institution - The University of Fiji.
 
The Minister also highlighted the role of leaders in the society and the importance of growing young talent and entrusting them with responsibilities to guarantee that our legacy continues. She thanked the Samaj for continuing their partnership in progressing the betterment of Education and preservation of the indentured culture and heritage.
