Forests are vital for maintaining our environment, safeguarding unique flora and fauna, and providing communities with environmental, social, cultural, and economic advantages through their ecosystems.
This was highlighted by the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, Hon. Alitia Bainivalu at the Lavena Coastal Walk handing over to the Vanua o Lavena, Wainikeli in Taveuni recently by the Ministry of Forestry following its recent upgrades and renovations
During her keynote address, Minister Bainivalu, emphasized the importance of collective efforts in managing and preserving our forests and natural resources.
"Our Ministry's goal for this financial year is to establish and support community-based forest parks in partnership with landowning communities, and we are pleased to see one of these initiatives officially handed over today," stated Hon. Bainivalu.
The minister praised the Lavena community for acknowledging the importance of forest conservation and for recognizing how it can yield economic, social, environmental, and cultural benefits for both current and future generations.
"As caretakers of the Vanua o Lavena land and sea, your commitment to protecting your pristine forest resources through the creation of an eco-tourism initiative serves as a valuable example for others and will offer pride and benefits for your children and generations to come," Hon. Bainivalu remarked.
She noted that the Lavena eco-tourism venture is recognized as one of the successful community-based cooperatives and expressed gratitude for the hard work and dedication of the community members.
The Minister mentioned that the Lavena coastal walk has served as an educational resource for various schools, universities, and organizations in Fiji and beyond, highlighting its conservation initiatives, rich biodiversity, and community involvement. The upgraded coastal walk will continue to support these educational efforts in the future.
Additionally, the event included the handover of a fiberglass boat and engine to the Vanua o Lavena to aid in the monitoring of their i-qoliqoli, generate income, and support their initiatives.
"This collaboration has also strengthened the government's connection and engagement with our communities. I extend my thanks to the ministry staff and other stakeholders who worked tirelessly with the communities to make this vision a reality."
The program concluded with a tour of the Lavena District School led by the Hon. Minister, followed by a talanoa session with invited guests and stakeholders.
At the same time, the Hon. Minister had the great honor of participating in the Lavena waterfall tours earlier this morning, which featured six stunning waterfalls: Triple Waterfall - Wainivaca, Waivuso, Waitovu, Savumirimiri Spring, Savuleveavonu, and Savubasoga.
